Radio Oglaigh na h-Éireann was established in 1962 to provide a shortwave service to Irish Defence Forces serving in United Nations peacekeeping missions in the Republic of the Congo. The service was discontinued after several years. Daily broadcasts were made on 17.544MHz at 17:30 UTC, using a transmitter located at the Curragh Camp. Programmes, which were provided by Radio Éireann, included news, sports results, music and drama, including The Kennedys of Castleross. The Defence Forces encompass the army, navy, air corps and reserve forces of Ireland. The President of Ireland is the formal Supreme Commander of the Defence Forces, but in practice they answer to the Irish Government via the Minister for Defence.
