Alkorta began playing as a junior with Athletic de Bilbao in 1978, and made his professional debut with the club's second team seven years later, making 40 appearances before being promoted by Howard Kendall to the senior team for 1987 88, making his debut in a 0-1 defeat at Real Valladolid, on October 24, 1987.
