In 1898, Robert's life as a small river town tobacco farmer near Petersburg, Georgia was uneventful. Dreaming of successful relationships and business dealings became part of his daily routine. However, dreams turn to nightmares when Robert's reputation was challenged following a disturbing accusation and breakup with his former girlfriend. Problems continued when the family tobacco barn burned to the ground reducing their only source of income to ashes. Robert's father was forced to accept new employment as a river ferryman in order for the family to survive the winter. Robert swore off any and all romantic relationships until he met Elizabeth, a beautiful and kind schoolteacher from Central Georgia. However, he quickly learned that being in a relationship with someone new did not mean his old problems had ended. In fact, as a result of meeting Elizabeth, his problems were just beginning. Robert found himself pushed to the limit as opposition came at him from every direction, even his own friends. It all reached a frightening conclusion on a small ferry in the middle of a flooded, raging river that threatened everyone and everything important to him. He was beginning to understand that life was like the river. There were times when the surface was calm and stayed within expected boundaries. At other times, a swift current created turbulence and danger at every turn.
