When Betsy, a strong and determined spinster of independent means, adopts her motherless nephew, she doesn't mean to fall head over heels in love with the child. When she plucks William from the bosom of his family, she does it out of self-interest, hoping to thwart unwelcome suitors. Her plans to raise William as a gentleman, allowing his respectability to rub off on herself almost work. But things don't always go to plan. One person, she hasn't considered is Joe, William's brother, who, years later, comes to revenge his loss, with devastating consequences for Betsy. William is horrified by his brother's betrayal and vows never to forgive him. It takes a travelling preacher to bring the brothers together once more. William sets off on a journey of discovery and fulfilment he never expected. The next generation fight their own battles against the evils of poverty and greed. Can William stop his son, John, from losing everything? This is a family saga about love, loss and betrayal. It is an intimate portrayal of a family dealing with big ideas of the times. The backdrop is the decaying, coastal town of Grimsby, Lincolnshire, trying to reinvent itself amid the turmoil of the Napoleonic wars, dissenting religion and the fight for voting reform.
Autorenporträt
Rosemary lived most of her early life in the flat lands of Lincolnshire before training as a librarian and moving between the Midlands and the South Coast. She began writing historical novels after retirement and has now written five novels, a children's book, and collaborated on a ghost book and short story collection. Her Lincolnshire roots are evident in three books Ranter's Wharf, Sadie's Wars and The Bluebird Brooch. Before moving to Norfolk, Rosemary was a director of Chindi Authors Network and appeared in various book events in West Sussex.Rosemary's second love is historical research. She worked as a volunteer with the University of Melbourne and Female Convicts Research Centre on a project to uncover the lives of convicts sent to Van Diemen's Land, which helped enormously with her first book, Search for The Light, featuring three young girls transported in 1824. This led to a trilogy - The Currency Girls Saga based on her husband's family in Australia, a real rags to riches and back again story. Her latest book is a departure. The Bluebird Brooch was set in 2019 but is threaded through with a family story spanning over a hundred and fifty years.
