Rape Plots documents the cultural significance of biblical scholarship and the Bible to the prevalence of rape in contemporary society. Focused on Genesis 34 and informed by feminist scholarship, this study examines ideas on rape reflected in nineteenth-century German commentaries as well as interpretations from 1970 to 1997. Cross-disciplinary references to forensic medicine and feminist theories place the views of biblical readers into cultural contexts. Rezensionen
"Susanne Scholz's fascinating study combines a close exegesis of Genesis 34 along rhetorical-critical lines with in-depth analysis of forensic and theological interpretation of rape as well as feminist stands against sexual violence. In a highly perceptive and persuasive way, the author unmasks all kinds of trivializations of rape plots in materials from the nineteenth century to the present. The gist of Scholz's argument drives home a point quite painful to contemporary Christian consciences. May the message be heard and heeded by many!" (Erhard S. Gerstenberger, University of Marburg, Germany)
"Scholz's excellent contribution to the field of cultural biblical criticism demonstrates why violence against women is a key issue in feminist studies. Her scholarly study of the story of Dinah in Genesis 34 discloses how rape functions as a basis of cultural control in biblical interpretation, in the text, and in the lives of the readers." (Letty M. Russell, Yale Divinity School)
"Susanne Scholz's work is a fine example of creative multidisciplinary research. With its attention to larger contemporary sociocultural problematics and effort to place them within larger historical discursive and cultural context that include the Bible, the work makes itself a fascinating model of biblical scholarship for our times." (Vincent L. Wimbush, Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins, Union Theological Seminary, New York)
