This work examines the physicality of reading.Scholarship in fields such as reader-responsecriticism and book history often neglect the body andthe physicality of the processes they study -examining reading as a disembodied act. However, reading relates reflexively to our texts, ourcultures, and our bodies. By examining theserelationships, I study how reading inhabits ourbodies both through how we read and through how weare read. Since bodies are specific and personal, andknowing that I cannot claim objectivity about theprocess, I include a personal narrative as well asimages of other readers. The physical experience ofreading changes us and our perceptions. In light ofnew media developments, which are already changingreading practices, we must try to gain a morethorough, rounded understanding of what reading is inorder to have some stake in what it is to become.(Edmonton, University of Alberta, MA Thesis, 2006)
