This book is a product of a research work done in the area of reading comprehension. The objective was to find out if teaching text structure awareness to students could enhance comprehension. Research evidence has shown that teaching text structure awareness to students who used English as their first language enhanced performance. This study replicated these strategies with students who use English as a second language. This was necessary looking at the difficulty such students have getting information from textbooks. Recent WAEC and other external examinations has prompted the need to help students interact with content material. The study used senior secondary school students in two states of Nigeria. The research used the Solomon-four experimental design to carry out its findings. All testing materials were tested on a pilot study. Findings showed that text structure awareness can be taught to students as a strategy for identifying important information, thus it enhances comprehension. Other findings include that text types do not necessarily enhance comprehension.
