Book Synopsis: This book is for: * Parents who want to give their children a head start with their education. * Parents of children with reading difficulties who want to give their children extra help or an earlier start with learning to read. * Parents of children diagnosed with dyslexia * Adults who need to improve their understanding of English texts by revising phonics. * Students who are learning English as second language. Autobiography: Marilyn developed her career around her love of books and reading. She trained as a teacher-librarian specialising in children's literature and primary (grade) school teaching. Marilyn has taught English and mathematics to children from prep grade to year nine in secondary schools over three decades. She later retrained as a literacy specialist. Marilyn found many opportunities to teach children who had difficulty learning to read. She has taught many students (including adults) to read and write English. She still does this as a private tutor and has an adult writing class. After sitting with many frustrated students who did not know how to decode (sound out) words, Marilyn devised a series of lessons that allowed students to sound out words quickly. These lessons are the foundation of this book. Modern reading research has shown the crucial role of phonics in learning to read, write and spell. Many children fail to gain the ability to read and write because they lack the understanding of how the English alphabet system works. Apart from her teaching career, Marilyn spent some time as an educational consultant for two publishers. She visited many schools, speaking to and informing teachers about current academic publications and trialling software for education developers. Marilyn wrote this book to share her knowledge and experience. She is passionate about children becoming fluent readers and writers. Marilyn knows this book provides the individual tuition many children need.
