This research took as hypothesis that participants reading of authentic materials (e.g., newspaper articles) can provide the literacy researcher with important information about participants employment of reading comprehension strategies and critical thinking skills. Kelly, Offner & Vorland (2002) consider that authentic materials (e.g. newspaper articles) offers topics from which usually readers already have some prior knowledge, thus, this prior knowledge facilitates to the reader, her/his simultaneous application of reading comprehension strategies an critical thinking skills while reasoning about the content of the text.
