Rebecca watched the light November snow swirl around in her mother's grave as the casket was lowered to its final resting place. She focused on the snow. She couldn't think about the casket and what it meant. She was only twelve after all. She had never known her father. He was a soldier and died when she was a baby. Now her mother was gone-killed in a car crash. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Rebecca loses her mother and then goes to live on a 160 acre farm in central Minnesota with her Grandmother, Naomi. The farm seems magical with gravel hills, ancient oaks, fertile valleys and a 12 acres pond clean enough to swim in and deep enough to fish in even in Winter. Naomi can see how hard losing her mother has been on Rebecca so she tells her a wonderful but magical secret that involves something that flies with wings! (You'll have to read the book yourself to find out the details of the whole secret). This young adult fiction tale is as adventurous as can be. It's so much fun to read a book with a young female heroine for a nice change. From Chapter 15: The Battle: "As Rebecca surveyed the battle, she noticed the trolls seemed to be trying to separate Naomi from her team. Several surrounded her and though she fought fiercely, Rebecca feared she couldn't defeat them all. Again, without thinking she rushed to her defense. She flew in ever smaller circles, picking off trolls as she went. Soon she was firing at point blank range." The story is satisfying to read. Its presentation is amazing grabbing hold of the spectacular or fantastical and making it all seem very real to the reader. The characterizations are drawn out well making them seem believable and likable. Green's prose is experienced and effective. He is definitely up to the task of creating this original and magnificent world where his story takes place. The imagination soars while reading this new book. Green has brought such a wonderful character or really characters to very real life. It will be interesting to see how the main character's (Rebecca) story develops if an additional book or two is to follow this one. This book is a celebration of sorts. It also blends in characters from the beloved Camelot story, too! Green has given us a marvelous and active adventure. He has put together a fast-paced story you will fall head over heels for. LB Sedlacek BIO Gary Green grew up on a small dairy farm in central Minnesota. After graduating from St. Cloud State University with a psychology degree he worked in the mental health field for many years.
