The life of protagonist Dan Ruttle is reconstructed through scenes from his life in Ireland: his time in Catholic school, his brother's illness, his infatuation for Olivia. The past and present are interwoven in these pages and Aidan Higgins crafts a portrait of himself, but also of his country, in the years surrounding the Second World War.
