In the Middle ages, the road that led from slavery to freedom did not exist. A soldier who was captured in war, a family who was taken in conquest and a child who was born in slavery would always and only be a slave, unless a monarch chose to make a royal declaration and set them free. Elizabeth had been captured as a young girl and had spent her entire thirty five years being owned. Because of her heterochromia, or differently colored eyes, she was usually feared and often traded in favor of someone less threatening, so her life was largely marked by misery and mistrust. After being owned by a somewhat reasonable businessman for four years in the huge marketplace in Constantinople in the year 964 and being only known by her Persian moniker of Zarin, a series of almost unbelievable events take place that appear to be leading Elizabeth into a completely different life. A life of freedom. This adventure will require that the slave known as Zarin must die before the free woman named Elizabeth can suddenly appear in Constantinople and begin a new life. The complexities of this taking place will require great courage and will also require a lot of assistance from strangers. What Elizabeth discovers in this process is that she is already valuable and that she is already loved, a lesson that everyone needs to learn.
