Management, in its phenomenal nature and characteristic, has been described as: Art or Science; Magic-making and politicking; Apology for scarcity of resources; Human behaviour complexities; Management as a process; Management as an abstract phenomenon; and, Management as a profession. The word "management" is particularly difficult to explain. It denotes a function and the people who discharge it. Further, it denotes a social position and rank; and, a discipline and field of study. All institutions have in common the management function, the management task and the management work. They also all require it to be an active organ in order to be effective. Otherwise, the institutions are a fiction, an accounting reality but not a social reality.
