Regional Innovation Performance in the European Union

Convergence or Divergence?

The present study investigates the extent to which European regions converge in terms of innovation performance. The findings indicate that there is no sign of convergence between EU-25 regions. However, when regions are classified according to innovation performance such as low, medium and high performers, then significant convergence occurs. This means that convergence occurs only at the group level, not at the European level.

Thanos is a doctoral candidate in innovation studies at the Department of Management, Birkbeck, University of London, where he also works as a seasonal lecturer.
