In der Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel sind 350.000 Bücher aus der Zeit vor 1830 überliefert. Die Sammlung von Porträtstichen umfasst ca. 25.000 Blätter. In der Reihe A des Katalogs erschienen zunächst 28 Bildbände. Die neun Textbände liefern Angaben zu den abgebildeten Personen, Bildbeschreibungen sowie Angaben zum Künstler und zur angewendeten Technik. Das Supplement ergänzt in sechs Bänden 3.000 nach Erscheinungsbeginn des Katalogs neu erworbene Porträts sowie über 600 weitere Porträts. Das Werk wird in sieben Registerbänden mit 15 Einzelregistern erschlossen.
