Reinforced concrete structures have the potential to be very durable and capable of withstanding a variety of adverse environmental conditions. However failures in structures do still occur as a result of premature reinforcement corrosion, construction and design errors and detrimental environmental factors. The maintenance and repair of bridges and buildings for their safety requires effective inspection and monitoring techniques for assessing the infrastructure condition. Engineers need better techniques for assessing the condition of the structure when maintenance or repair is required. These methods need to be able to identify any possible durability problems within structures before they become serious. In this study a review of various maintenance and rehabilitation measures applicable to highway RC bridges has been undertaken. In light of this, attention was also paid to a number of defects in bridges that require maintenance.
