Der dunkle Kontinent schlägt den jungen Schotten Mungo Park in seinen Bann. Zwei abenteuerliche Entdeckungsreisen (1795-1797 und 1805-1806) bringen ihn zum Niger, einem der gewaltigsten Ströme der Welt, und bis in die sagenumwobene Stadt Timbuktu. Auf der letzten Reise verschwindet Mungo Park spurlos im Herzen Afrikas. Sein mysteriöser Tod bleibt bis heute eines der nie gelösten Rätsel der Entdeckungsgeschichte.

Friedrich D. E. Schleiermacher (1768-1834) wirkte als Theologe, Philosoph und Geistlicher vor allem in Halle und Berlin.
