Learn how current relationship counselling can be improved for couples where one or both partners are autistic with this essential guide by world-leading Autism experts Tony Attwood and Maxine Aston. Couples where one or both partners are autistic may face unique challenges in the therapy room. There can be differences in expectation and communication styles not only between partners but also their therapist. Without expert knowledge of autism, couples often feel let down by their therapists or experience negative therapeutic advice resulting in the further strain or breakdown of their relationship. This book provides everything you need to know to become a well-equipped, affirming therapist and addresses the knowledge gap between standard therapy and therapy for neurodiverse couples. Based on research and responses from autistic neurodiverse couples themselves, this book gives a voice to all those that have been let down by the counselling support they received. Thoughtfully covering a wide range of topics from supporting a neurodiverse couple in therapy, recognising autism in the counselling room, the effects of autism on a relationship and how to make adaptations in a counselling session to Intimacy, sex, and sensory sensitivity and how to initiate and end sessions gives you the practical know-how to add to your therapeutic tool-kit that will be invaluable in supporting neurodiverse clients.
