Patrick Ness wuchs in den Vereinigten Staaten und auf Hawaii auf. Seit Ende der 90er-Jahre lebt er in London und ist dort als Dozent für kreatives Schreiben und Literaturkritiker für die Tageszeitung The Guardian tätig. Für seine Kinder- und Jugendbücher wurde er mehrfach ausgezeichnet, er gewann unter anderem den renommierten Costa Children's Book Award und war auf der Auswahlliste für die Carnegie Medal.
