Frank woke up one morning in January of 2012 hungover and in pain. He realized that he was not in his bed but on a 2-inch pad on the cement floor of the Multnomah County Jail in Portland Oregon. This was not Frank's first time in this jail. Frank would later find out the shooting pain was from a busted clavicle, after crashing a moped into a parked van the previous night. Frank was drunk and blacked out when this happened. This was Frank's third DUI. Frank started to feel a worse pain than a broken bone, he started to feel shame as he thought about how this would impact his 4-year-old son. Frank knew there would be severe legal consequences from this offense. Frank has a few options ahead of him, plead guilty and spend some time in jail, hire an expensive lawyer and try to fight it, or participate in a 3-year intensive diversion supervision program designed to reduce recidivism rates for habitual driving under the influence offenders. This case study follows Frank as he navigates this decision and attempts to change a cycle of addiction. Frank will try to manage life without alcohol and will quickly find out that just because you put the bottle down, does not mean everything will be easy.
