Prima Facie is Latin for "on its face" (at first appearance). Evidence at first glance that appears to prove its proposition. Only the man was allowed to initiate a divorce, not the woman (Deuteronomy 24:1). Only the woman is bound to the law of her husband, not the man (Romans 7:2; 1 Corinthians 7:39). Only the woman is to remain unmarried or reconcile after separation, not the man (1 Corinthians 7:11). Only the widow questioned her freedom to remarry, not the man (1 Corinthians 7:39; 1 Timothy 5:14). Man did not have the limitations of the woman, nor woman the permissions of man. It was designed that way from creation. Man was not created for the woman, but woman for man. God did not permit divorce in the beginning, "from the beginning it was not so" (Matthew 19:8). He designed marriages to be for life. Moses, however, allowed man to put away his wife for uncleanness because of the hardness of his heart. Men abused this permission and put away their wife for just any reason (Matthew 19:3). Jesus tried to correct this application; however, believers are divorcing for irreconcilable differences. This book looks at contracts and covenants to get a better understanding of marriage, divorce, and remarriage in the Bible.
