Fixed orthodontic therapy comes with long-standing responsibilities for both the orthodontist and the patient themselves, one of which is maintenance of proper hygiene. A common adverse effect of orthodontic treatment is formation of white spot lesions which has a negative impact on dental aesthetics. Orthodontic patients are at a higher risk of development of white spot lesions mainly owing to the inability to maintain adequate oral hygiene, as such lesions can be frequently seen under and around loose bands, bracket base or appliances. Other preventative avenues clinicians can explore are in-office application of applying fluoride varnishes, sealants, or adhesives in plaque retentive areas. These procedures are effective and eliminate the need for patient compliance with varnish application showing a 44% decrease in rate of enamel demineralization.
