In the present work, the removal of lead and cadmium, metals highly hazardous to humans and the environment, from a standard solution using bovine bone as a natural adsorbent is presented. Bone is mainly constituted by calcium apatite known as hydroxyapatite (HAP), which is a transparent-translucent solid and poorly soluble in water. The ionic character of PAH [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2], gives it the capacity for partial or complete substitution of network ions by others of similar size. Dr. José Refugio Parga Torres holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from Tecnológico de la Laguna, a Master of Science degree from the University of Colorado School of Mines and a PhD in Metallurgy from the University of Utah. His 42 years of teaching experience is focused on gold and silver recovery and smelting of non-ferrous metals.
