The studies were conducted to assess the removal of Cu(II), Cd(II), Cr(III) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions by adsorption using low-cost adsorbent produced from the naturally and abundantly available fibre of rubberwood. The preparation process was carried out through graft copolymerization of acrylamide onto fibre. Kinetic data were analyzed using the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order equations. The equilibrium parameters were obtained using the Langmuir and Freundlich models and the Langmuir model was found to be in better correlation with the experimental data with the maximum adsorption capacity. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated and adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The results showed that acrylamide-graft-rubberwood fibre developed in this study could be an economical and effective adsorbent for application in removal of heavy metals from wastewaters.
