Geboren am 26.05.1822 in Nancy, gestorben am 16.07.1896 in Champrosay. Goncourt war der Sohn eines ehemaligen napoleonischen Offiziers. Er arbeitete in enger Schaffensgemeinschaft mit seinem Bruder Jules Alfred. Ihre Romane sind dokumentarisch und zeigen besondere Vorliebe für die unteren Gesellschaftsschichten.
