Pioneering studies on HIV fitness have shown that fitness is related to disease progression and may have important clinical relevance, both in untreated and treated HIV-positive subjects. In this doctoral thesis, we have used a wide variety of predominantly primary patient HIV isolates, originating from diverse regions in the world to further explore the impact of HIV replicative fitness on the infected individual, but also on the temporal evolution of the HIV epidemic.
