High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Republic of Yucatán (Spanish: República de Yucatán) was a sovereign nation in North America that existed from 1841 to 1848. It encompassed the present Mexican states of Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatán, which during the Spanish domination were the colonial Captaincy General of Yucatán, under New Spain, but separated from the Viceroyalty of Mexico. In this period of autonomy, amongst the most important achievements of the people of Yucatan was the writing of one of the most advanced constitutions of its time. The Constitution of 1841 used terminology that still exists in current law, and makes mention of guarantees of individual religious freedom and legal protection. During this period, the Republic experienced a crisis caused by the Caste War, which forced the rulers of Yucatán to seek military aid from Mexico in exchange for the reinstatement of Yucatán to Mexico.
