The selection of biological treatment depends on quality of effluent and the percentage removal required. Biological treatments are also used for selective removal of many heavy metals, phosphorous and other pollutants. It was found that phenol removal using decomposition by various bacterial pathways was feasible and effective alternative. Biosorption of phenol was simple and effective method for phenol removal. Both suspended and attached growth processes are investigated for phenol removal and can be potentially effective choice for biological phenol removal.Biological treatments are economical and effective for organic matter removal. Anaerobic mode of biological treatment is very effective for treating domestic and industrial sludge containing high organic loading. Cost effective technology with compact equipment size is always advantage in process selection. The available technologies can be modified to make them more and more cost effective. Coupling of two unit operations or processes can exhibit excellent results in some processes can exhibit excellent results in some cases.Combination of membrane separation with reaction is found to be effective in some applications.
