The overall structure of the study takes the form of five sections, including the introductory section.The first section of this paper examines the role of applied research in a development context. Section two begins by laying out the different epistemological and boundary issues of the research, and looks at its impact on the research process. The third section is concerned with the methodology used in the literature review. The final chapter discusses validity issues within the social sciences focusing on what constitutes rigour in development research. Finally, the conclusion gives a brief summary and critique of the findings.
