The present work attempts a comprehensive review of research works accomplished in Library and Information Science discipline in India during 1957-2006 with a view to examine the trends in and pattern of research at the national level with a special focus on doctoral research work done at Department of Library & Information Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Initially, the research in library science in India remaining a sporadic activity for about two decades reached its threshold point in 1977 to touch the water divide mark by 1990. The 1990s recorded a rapid growth in both the number of doctoral degree awarded and geographical spread of universities/ institutes running doctoral degree programmes in the country. Panjab University has covered diverse sub-fields and emerging themes more than the national level. Diversity of themes and use of scientific methods in research, is a marked feature of doctoral dissertations at Panjab University which has prompted one of the researcher to formulate as many as 20 hypotheses for empirical testing.

Ms. Reshma is currently working as Librarian in a bi-national Institute of repute " Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute". She has more than 10 years experience in field of Library and Information Science. She has worked in College Libraries and University Libraries prior to her current assignment.She is alumni of Panjab University.
