The modern church no longer operates with the understanding of the five fold gifts of ministry of the first church, nor does it understand the government of collegial elders who were given the responsibility of shared oversight of God's flock. The rise of the single pastor ministry has all but eradicated the concept of a five fold ministry and has resulted in a maladaptive leadership structure contrary to scripture. Professor Davis writes from a 45 year experience in church planting, having learned that the gift of pastor and the office of elder are different, and the understanding of the five fold gifts will change the way churches will view the nature of ministry by restoring the gift of pastor to its rightful place of but one of the five fold gifts of ministry.
