Autorenporträt
Julian of Norwich was a medieval Christian mystic and theologian, best known for her book Revelations of Divine Love. Born around 1343, very little is known about her early life, including her birth name. She lived during a tumultuous period in England marked by the Black Death, social unrest, and religious strife. Her identity as "Julian" comes from her association with St. Julian's Church in Norwich, where she lived as an anchoress-someone who chooses a solitary, religious life of contemplation in a small cell attached to a church. In 1373, when Julian was about 30 years old, she experienced a series of mystical visions, or "shewings," during a severe illness that nearly claimed her life. These visions, which centered on the love and compassion of God, profoundly shaped her theological views. After recovering, she initially recorded her experiences in what is now known as the Short Text. Over the following decades, while living a secluded life as an anchoress, she expanded these reflections into a more comprehensive account known as the Long Text, offering profound insights into themes like divine love, suffering, and salvation. Her work emphasized God's unconditional love and the idea that "all shall be well," providing a message of hope and comfort that was unique for her time.Despite living a solitary life, Julian's reputation for wisdom and spiritual guidance grew, and people sought her counsel through a small window in her cell. After her death, her writings were preserved by others, with the first known publication of her Revelations of Divine Love occurring in 1670. Interest in her work revived in the 20th century, leading to numerous translations and studies that solidified Julian's legacy as an influential Christian mystic and theologian. Today, she is remembered for her deep insights into the nature of God's love and for her remarkable contributions to English religious literature.
