Oral application of peptide drugs and small molecule drugs holds tremendous potential of increasing therapy compliance while reducing health care expenditure, but an enormous problem to be addressed is the low bioavailability. One of the promising strategies to overcome this major drawback might be the use of reverse micelles (RM). Under consideration of the lipophilicity of these nanocarriers, self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS) are a promising carrier system for drug administration. The research focused on four different surfactants, one representative each from the group of anionic, cationic, zwitterionic and non-ionic surface-active agents, was intended to reveal new possibilities for a seminal way of drug administration.
