This volume consists of new versions of poems first published in two earlier collections. Perhaps the greatest reward in writing poetry is the discovery of certain truths relating to the life of poems and to the life of artworks in general. The most important of those truths is the fact of Time, that dimension in which all art is both suspended and inevitably transformed. The poet can reflect with satisfaction that, in the course of his quest, he may well produce something which so pleases the reader that the reader considers it definitively perfect. For the poet himself, however, there can be no repose in a 'finished product'. A poem is a youth of no fixed abode. His hope: that every new lodging will be his final, perfect home.
