In this study, a retrospective of the valorization of humanization in a university in southern Brazil was carried out. The relevance of the philosophical, anthropological, social, ethical and humanistic bases was discussed, which are involved in the formation of the academic of a medicine course. The commitment of this professional with his patient was approached, in the "art of healing", from a true, concrete, worthy, responsible and human formation. It was used, as a methodological resource, two approaches of qualitative nature: semi-participant descriptive observations of the experiences of medical students, in practical activities, in collective spaces and semi-structured interviews carried out with the medical students, with questions directed to formation and medical performance. In sequence, a reflection of the observations and narratives of the undergraduate students of this course was carried out. In the discussions of the results, weaknesses were perceived in these inter-relationships, with tenuous approximations to the attitudes that permeate the humanization: the bond, the welcoming and the integrality. As contributions, we sought to revitalize the understanding and action of the humanities, for an education based on affectivity.
