An Up-Close View of the Mighty Mississippi River and A Visit To Lake Superior After crossing the Mississippi River many times as part of other long-distance cycling journeys, David decided to do more with America's most famous river. The distance of the river journey totaled out at over 2,500 miles over two summers while Freeze followed the Mississippi as closely as possible. He didn't miss interesting sites along the way like the Field of Dreams, and plenty of historic towns and cities as he pedaled to almost New Orleans before equipment issues ended Part 1 during August 2022. Part 2 followed the Mississippi north to its source at Lake Itasca, Minnesota. More than a mile wide at times, the Mississippi is reduced to just 12 feet wide and knee deep there. Not ready to be done at the river source, Freeze pedaled on the North Shore of Lake Superior to the Canadian border and back to Minneapolis. Still the unfinished last 30 miles into New Orleans called Freeze back with his Surly Long Haul Trucker bike to complete the whole river in October, 2023. Another interesting group of people along the way add to the incredible experience as told by Freeze's down-to-earth writing and humor. Ride along another time with one of America's foremost cycling adventurers as he chronicles more of backroads America.
