Born in Houston House, Linlithgowshire, Shairp was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and Glasgow University, later attending Balliol College, Oxford. His career at Oxford culminated in his appointment as Principal of United College, St Andrews, where he also served as Professor of Poetry.
