Robert Fergusson was born in Cap and Feather Close, a vennel off Edinburgh's Royal Mile in 1750. He attended Edinburgh's Royal High School, the High School of Dundee and the University of St Andrews. In 1771, he anonymously published the first of a trio of pastorals in Ruddiman's Weekly Magazine, entitled "Morning," "Noon" and "Night." Fergusson's Poems on Various Subjects appeared in 1773. He died of a head injury in 1774. James Robertson is a writer of the highest quality. His second novel, Joseph Knight, won the two major Scottish literary prizes in 2003/4--the Saltire Scottish Book of the Year and the Scottish Arts Council Book of the Year. He has also published stories, poetry and anthologies. He was the Scottish Parliament's first writer in residence and lives in Angus.
