Lumberton is the county seat. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is located in the county. Robeson County is bounded by the state of South Carolina, and the North Carolina counties of Bladen, Columbus, Cumberland, Hoke, and Scotland. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 951 square miles (2,463 km²), making it the largest in North Carolina. 949 square miles (2,457 km²) of it is land and 2 square miles (6 km²) of it (0.23%) is water.
