Lindley S. Butler (1939-2022) was a native of Rockingham County who received his Ph.D. in history from UNC at Chapel Hill. He is the author or editor of numerous books including Pirates, Privateers, and Rebel Raiders of the Carolina Coast and A History of North Carolina in the Proprietary Era, 1629-1729.
