Left-footed, he usually operates as a left midfielder, but can also appear in the middle, and as an offensive left back. He's also known for his long-distance shots, and spent most of his professional career in Portugal, with Sporting Clube de Portugal, where he arrived at only 21. Tello began his career at C.F. Universidad de Chile, making his professional debuts in 1999. He quickly made a good impression, being named the best midfielder in the country in 2000, and was transferred to Sporting Clube de Portugal for a fee of 7 millions in January of the following year, at the same time as compatriot Mario Cáceres; it was a then club record for the Portuguese first division side.
