The Lieutenant Governor's duty is to preside as President of the Senate, and is responsible for legislative relations, the state budget and agri-business development. Should the Governor's office become vacant, the Lieutenant Governor assumes that office. The current Lieutenant Governor is Drew Wrigley. With the election of Governor John Hoeven to one of North Dakota's Senate seats in November 2010, then Lieutenant Governor Dalrymple automatically assumed the governorship upon Hoeven's resignation. Dalrymple appointed Wrigley to be Lieutenant Governor shortly after.
