Roland Hill Hartley (June 26, 1864 September 21, 1952) served two terms as the tenth Governor of the state of Washington from 1925 to 1933 as a Republican.Born in Shogomoc, York County, New Brunswick, June 26, 1864. Son of Rev. Edward Hartley and Rebecca Barker (Whitehead) Hartley; eighth of twelve children. Married 1888 to Nina M. Clough.Mayor of Everett, Washington, 1910-12 for one term. Member of Washington state house of representatives, 1915-16. The gavel used for Hartley's swearing in ceremony was the same gavel used by his father-in-law Governor David Clough of Minnesota for his swearing in. 10th Governor of Washington, 1925-33. Hartley s major accomplishments during his governorship were the creation of a centralized state highway department and new state timber laws.
