Wound sepsis can be life-threatening in patients suffering from major burn injuries. Topical silver-based medicines have been used since historic times to treat infections and healing process in burn wounds. However, these agents report limitations such as skin discoloration (argyria) and cell damage. Silver nanoparticles has emerged as a novel carrier system, and are effective against superbug methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and other micro-organisms including P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, E. coli, which are quite prevalent in burn wound injury and can bring a paradigm shift in burn wound treatment.
