As of 2000, the population was 13,674. Its county seat is Rolla. The International Peace Garden is located in the northwest corner of the county along the border with Canada. The racial makeup of the county was 25.12% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 73.01% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 1.61% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 9.3% were of Norwegian and 7.4% German ancestry according to Census 2000. 94.6% spoke English, 1.3% Ojibwa, 1.0% French Creeand 1.0% Cree as their first language.
