The diocese comprises the arrondissements of Avesnes-sur-Helpe, Cambrai, Douai, and Valenciennes all within the département of Nord of France, in the Region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais. The current archbishop is François Charles Garnier, appointed in December 2000. As of 2002, the Archdiocese is now suffragan to the Archdiocese of Lille, reversing the prior arrangement.Originally erected in the 6th century as the Diocese of Cambrai, its jurisdiction was immense and included even Brussels and Antwerp.
