The western portion of Routt County was split off to form Moffat County on February 27, 1911.In June 2008, a David Engle died in a downtown home painted purple. It was registered as a garage although it had been used as a residence for 20 years. County Assessor Mike Kerrigan was quoted as saying that there are many illegal buildings and enforcement of the regulations is lax.
