Its capital is Ruhango town, a large settlement on the road between Gitarama and Butare. The district lies due-north of the provincial capital Nyanza, straddling the major road from Kigali to Bujumbura. Ruhango district is divided into 9 sectors (imirenge): Bweramana, Byimana, Kabagari, Kinazi, Kinihira, Mbuye, Mwendo, Ntongwe and Ruhango.
