He played as a striker, and had highly successful spells at two of the biggest clubs in Portugal, Benfica and FC Porto, scoring more than 100 goals in the Portuguese Liga alone. Águas started his career with local club Sesimbra before turning professional in 1983 84, when he signed for first divisioner Portimonense from Atlético Clube de Portugal. Moving to Benfica in 1985, Águas netted an average of 12 goals in his first spell, helping the Lisbon outfit to the league on three occasions. He was present at the 1988 European Cup final, as os Águias lost on penalties to PSV 6 5.
