Born in Ceira, Coimbra, Miguel joined Académica de Coimbra''s youth ranks at the age of 10, but never broke into the first team. He served two loans in the lower leagues, and only amassed three first-team appearances, the first coming on April 15, 2006, in the dying stages of the season, at Rio Ave FC; the students won it 4 1 and he scored as a starter. In the 2008 summer, Rui Miguel moved abroad, to Bulgarian side From there he went to Bulgarian 1st division club PFC Lokomotiv Mezdra, scoring three times in the first half of the season. In January 2009, he moved teams again, in the same country, signing with PFC CSKA Sofia, alongside teammate/countryman David Silva.
